The International Computing Education Research (ICER) Conference aims to gather high-quality contributions to the computing education research discipline. Papers for ICER 2014 will be double blind peer-reviewed.
A particular focus of the conference is to foster discussion and new research areas, with a doctoral consortium for graduate students just prior to the conference, and a critical research review session for practising researchers directly afterwards, both supporting high quality feedback on research proposals. This is in addition to the single-track conference sessions, where all paper presentations include time for discussion among the attendees followed by feedback to the paper presenters.
Papers
This year ICER is accepting papers in a single category:.
Research papers. 8 pages. Papers should have:
- A clear theoretical basis, building on existing literature in computing education, computer science, and other related disciplines.
- A strong empirical basis, drawing on relevant research methods. Papers that re-interpret and explain others’ empirical results are welcome.
- An explication of the paper’s impact on, and contribution to, existing knowledge about computing education.
All papers should follow the ACM SIGCSE formatting guidelines. Templates for submissions can be found at the ACM SIG Proceedings website. LaTeX users should use option #2 (tighter alternate style) when formatting their document.
Papers will be double-blind reviewed by at least three reviewers, in line with ACM’s process defined for “refereed material” found here. The Chairs will be supported by the Associate Chairs, whose role is to summarize and abstract over the reviews by committee members, to facilitate the final selection of papers. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date will be one week prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
Lightning talks
In addition to research paper presentations, the conference will again include a lightning talk session. Lightning Talks are strictly-timed 3 minute presentations intended to further expand the ICER community and spark discussion among conference participants. The intent is for these talks to provide a venue in support of new ideas and newcomers to our community. Lightning Talks are a great way to get early feedback on a work in progress, to demo a new tool or technique, and to find potential collaborators at other institutions.
NOTE: Work already being presented at ICER (ie., accepted papers, doctoral consortium submissions) is ineligible for the lightning talks session.
Submissions for consideration as lightning talks should use the provided MS Word template and are limited to a maximum of 300 words. Abstracts will be made available on the conference website prior to the event, but they will not be included in the conference proceedings. (*) We offer a re-submission slack of exactly one week. This means that an almost complete version of papers must be submitted by the 14 April deadline, but it will be possible to upload updated versions of papers until 21st April. Papers that are not submitted by 14 April will not be considered.
Other Activities
The Doctoral Consortium will be held the day prior to ICER 2014, on Sunday, August 10th. This is an opportunity for graduate students to gain high quality feedback on their research proposals.
In a similar vein there will be a Critical Research Review session running the afternoon of Wednesday August 13th and the morning of Thursday August 14th. This post-conference workshop opportunity will allow practising CS education researchers to gain high quality feedback on their current projects and works in progress.
